Okay so we're ready to go switch to a week on the New Testament of course it could be you could be done in a whole course it would take to talk about all the things that are in they are but we're just gonna focus on what we need to understand about God's and what we need to understand that you're Dante so we're gonna start with Virgil as a kind of review from another slant I've been told and I've read that the Christians thought of Virgil as a kind of proto Christian that somehow Rome was ready for a new God and he knew it and was sad but because it hadn't happened yet and you'll see the Dante takes that up he felt that he felt there was something important was missing in his life and in Rome and I tried to signal that in the Aeneid itself remember the two things that it's better to be dead than alive according to virtual you'd have to lose your wits and be brainwashed and yet took go back into this world when you could live in that world where nothing dangerous or risky or meaningful ever happened but then nothing bad ever happened either and they were happy they were satisfied with that and then further the weird thing which is that he seems to sort of a saying that all of this duty and dedication culminates in Augustus Caesar then you get this mysterious passage which seems to say that the whole trip the in which he saw this procession in the afterlife that culminated in Augustus Caesar is a false dream because they go out from the underworld through the gate of ivory which is the false dream so it does look like Rome definitely needs a new and better God and a God that would bring hope and joy and love and ecstatic feelings and people willing to take risks and order to have a meaningful life and of course they they that means they need some new cultural paradigm some that's something new that holds up to them some other way of life and they get it because they at that very time when Augustus is it is in ruling the Christians Jesus is born is around and Christianity is coming in and what's it what you get from reading Virgil is as…
